BAINBRIDGE – The second quarter was the difference in the Class C quarterfinals girls basketball game between No. 4 Bainbridge-Guilford and fifth-seed Newark Valley Friday night. The Lady Bobcats outscored the Cardinals in that stanza 14-3 behind Abi Selfridge’s free throw shooting. Selfridge’s first two trips to the line in the quarter gave B-G the lead that they clung to for the rest of the contest, winning 54-44.
Selfridge finished with 21 points to lead all scorers and just over half of her points came from the stripe as she went 11-for-15.
The Bobcats were behind 15-13 at the end of the first but their defense on their home floor took over, allowing the visiting team to just one made free throw and a bucket from Brianna Beebe.
Bainbridge-Guilford took the nine point lead into locker room at the break.
As the two teams matched point totals in the third quarter, each scoring 11, the Bobcats lead stayed at nine with just eight minutes left to play.
Needing to make stops defensively, Newark Valley held Selfridge to just four points in the fourth, but the balanced scoring from the rest of the B-G team in the quarter allowed the team to win by 10 points.
The Cardinals were led by Hannah Ferguson’s 14 points in the game. Nine of her team-high total came from behind the 3-point arc as Newark Valley drained six as a team. Mackenzie Nechwedowich also scored double figures with 10 points.
Before the game started, Selfridge was honored for recording her 1,000th rebound during the MAC Championship contest to reach yet another career milestone. She reached the 1,000 point club a season ago.
Her younger sister Erica Selfridge recorded a double-double in the win, scoring 10 points and 10 grabbing rebounds. Ashley Matthews tallied 11 points, most coming in the fourth to held keep the lead, and Kori Thornton had six for the Bobcats.
With top-seeded Unatego winning their way through the sectional tournament, the two teams have now set up a rematch from the MAC Champions game in the Section IV semifinals. B-G won the title with a final of 53-42. The Bobcats also topped the Lady Spartans earlier in the year, 43-41, to give the No. 1 seeded team their only loss of the regular season.
The semifinal game has a scheduled start time of 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at SUNY Cortland. The game will be played at the conclusion of the other semifinal game between Newfield and Watkins Glen, which has a tip-off time of 6 p.m.
